Butterfly Coordinator 

Seasonal position:  April 30, 2018 - September 7, 2018
Approximately 20 hours/week 
Typical schedule:  Thursdays through Mondays 8:30 AM - 12:30 PM*
*Hours and days may vary, depending upon business needs. 
Rate of pay:  $12/hour

 
 

POSITION SUMMARY:

The part-time Butterfly Coordinator will support the Education and Horticulture Departments with the successful run of the Butterfly Bungalow exhibit, open May 26-Sep 3. This position will engage in a variety of tasks including: daily exhibit operations and maintenance, visitor engagement, ordering and intake of pupae, emergence chamber care, education activities and volunteer supervision. This position may also assist horticulture as needed. This individual will promote the mission of the Garden while providing quality customer service to visitors of all ages.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES/TASKS:

  • Oversee Butterfly Bungalow operations which includes assisting the Volunteer Manager with volunteer scheduling and training sessions, maintenance of the exhibit, upkeep of butterfly ordering and database management, Horticulture staff assistance (as needed) for plant care
  • Collect butterfly entrance tickets as needed and monitor capacity within the space
  • Prepare training materials and schedule butterfly training sessions for volunteers (with the Volunteer Manager)
  • Work closely with the education department and volunteers within the department to ensure butterfly-related or pollinator activities are available for visitors and groups
  • Lead interpretive efforts; share “butterfly etiquette” with all visitors
  • Work directly with the emergence chambers to provide butterfly maintenance as needed and emergence tracking
  • Prepare and maintain nectar stations
  • Transport and release new butterflies. Must be comfortable with handling live and dead insects along with cleaning chemicals

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

 

EXPERTISE:

MINIMUM

DESIRABLE

A. Education - Indicate the minimum amount needed and desirable

Some college or other specialty training beyond high school in either horticulture/plant sciences/education /informal learning or related field

Bachelor’s Degree in either biology, environmental education, horticulture/plant science or other related field

B. Experience/Training

(Type and Length)

Experience with butterflies, teaching environmental education or horticulture practices. Some supervisory experience preferred.

Experience rearing and caring for butterflies in various life cycles. Supervisory experience.

 

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Knowledge of native North Carolina butterfly species including their life cycles, insect husbandry and best exhibit practices.
  • Communication skills with strong public speaking abilities, able to speak informally with visitors along with staff and volunteers.
  • Strong ‘people person’—sensitivity to interpersonal interactions with program participants and guests as well as between departments, staff, and volunteers and the ability to act proactively to ensure good relations between all.
  • Enthusiastic and energetic, ability to quickly navigate all areas of the Garden.
  • Ability to work in a team yet also independently.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Able to work a flexible schedule, outdoors in the Butterfly Bungalow.
  • Willingness to wear a uniform and work outside.
