POSITION SUMMARY:
Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden is a nationally distinguished public garden known for its vibrant and eclectic collection of plants and elegant seasonal displays. The Landscape Technician is a production oriented position within the Horticulture Department and performs all levels of installing seasonal displays in addition to landscape and grounds maintenance. Landscape Technicians are integrated company staff members and actively participate in all forms of Garden programs and events.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assists with the installation and maintenance of seasonal displays and exhibits, especially Holidays at the Garden and Chinese Lanterns
  • Maintains all public garden areas to be safe, tidy and a daily representation of the highest level of horticultural display and maintenance standards.
  • Performs daily maintenance of public areas including blowing walks, leaf and litter removal and resetting outdoor furniture.
  • Performs seasonal turf maintenance including mowing, trimming, edging and fertilization.
  • Maintains formal hedges via pruning and shearing.
  • Performs trash pickup, mowing and invasive species management throughout non-public areas including roadways, meadows and woodlands.
  • Maintains display gardens to be relatively weed free.
  • Performs hand-watering, as required.
  • Participates in an active IPM program that includes scouting and both conventional and progressive control methods.
  • Supports the operation and maintenance of all automatic underground irrigation systems by way of scouting and performing basic repairs.
  • Ensures that general maintenance practices have limited impact on the guest experience.
  • Performs preventative maintenance to ensure the safe and proper operation of Garden vehicles and equipment.
  • Maintains equipment service and repair records.
  • Supports the Facilities Department in ongoing facility maintenance, particularly including fountain maintenance; event set-ups and break-downs; Garden opening and closing; and major building cleaning.
  • Responds to guest questions in the Garden.
  • Promotes safety and compliance to all Garden policies and procedures.
  • Oversees the training, scheduling and management of volunteers for horticultural maintenance and projects.
  • Performs all levels of landscape and grounds maintenance, as required.
  • Supports all Garden programs and events.
  • Participates in educational programs, including tours, classes and presentations.
  • Willingness to work evenings and weekends.
  • Understands the Garden Mission Statement and supports all Garden staff, departments and Garden Leadership in pursuing and achieving institutional goals.
  • Understands the guest perspective and works to support and enhance the guest experience in every way.


QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum of high school diploma and relevant landscape or horticultural maintenance experience.
Associate degree in related field and 2+ years of experience maintaining large scale properties would be ideal.
Applicants must successfully complete a criminal background check, possess a valid driver’s license and be able to produce a clean driving record.
