Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden is seeking a creative and inspired individual interested in building innovative educational programs based in the outdoor, garden environment for diverse audiences of all ages.
 

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Director of Education provides vision, leadership, and overall management for the Education Department and staff, including the Volunteer Program, School Programs, Continuing Education, Youth and Family Programming, Exhibit Interpretive Planning, and Collections Management.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES/TASKS:

  • Craft the overall vision for the Education Department to lead the staff and volunteers responsible for public programs as well school and outreach activities in developing, implementing, and evaluating programs, materials, and events for children, schools, families, and adults.
  • Develop school programs that fulfill curricular and developmental needs for Pre-K through High School audiences using the resources available at the Garden.
  • Build youth programs that engage children of all ages at Garden Events or through structured programs designed for audiences such as scouts, homeschoolers or birthday parties.
  • Create a platform of adult/continuing education programs that are financially self -sufficient, are related to themed or seasonal displays and/or encourage an active healthy lifestyle.
  • Responsible for public program development and coordination for ongoing educational activities including, but not limited to: Exhibition Programs, Public Programs, Outreach, School & Teacher Programs, and Volunteer Training. These duties include programming for seasonal events as planned throughout the year such as: Holiday, public event days such as Dia de los Muertos, Fairy Fest, Boo-tanical, Hair of the Dog Hike, and others..
  • Prepare, manage, and monitor budgets, and establish departmental priorities.
  • Coordinate staff and resources, and be directly involved in the implementation of programs.
  • Provide an external presence and develop partnerships in the regional community, including with peer organizations, schools and universities to expand our programmatic efforts and represent the educational direction of the Garden.
  • Play a leadership role in cooperation with the Development Department in the solicitation of funding to support educational efforts; serve as primary manager of grant funds received providing needed reports and communication.
  • Serves as a member of the Leadership Team, ensuring the mission and vision of DSBG is being realized through the implementation of the strategic plan. Serves the Board of Directors and associated committees under the direction of the Executive Director.
  • Provide educational leadership on the development of new Garden components that will be developed as outlined in the comprehensive Master Plan.
  • Other duties as required for coordinator and execution of educational initiatives and public programs.

  2. Job titles of those who report directly to this position: Youth Programs Manager, Volunteer Coordinator, Instructors, part-time staff, interns and volunteers

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

 

EXPERTISE:

MINIMUM

DESIRABLE

Bachelors Degree in horticulture, life sciences, museum studies, or education

Advance degree in horticulture, life sciences, museum studies, or education

B. Experience/Training

At least 3 years experience in related field

Direct program experience in public garden, science museum or similar institution

 

 

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Advanced computer skills, including management databases and basic design and presentation programs
  • Experience in the development of comprehensive educational programs in a nonprofit, informal science environment
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver engaging, integrated educational experiences
  • Experience in development of exhibitions and interpretation to reach a diverse public audience
  • Understanding of the relationships and process in securing and managing grant funding to support educational programming
  • Ability to use assessment measurements to determine effectiveness and financial strength of programming
  • Ability to represent the organization at local, regional and national levels
  • Previous supervisory experience, including exceptional leadership, management and communication skills and ability to work in a team environment
  • Passion for plant-based science education and environmental programs
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, change oriented environment
  • Must have a valid drivers license and the ability to successfully complete a background check  
  • Must be willing to work during the business week, evenings and weekends, depending upon business needs
