Custodial experience in a large, public facility is a plus. 
Must be willing to work a variety of hours - including early morning, late evenings and weekends



POSITION SUMMARY:

Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden is known as one of the top Gardens in the country and the presentation of impeccably maintained facilities is critical in promoting the Garden’s regional and national standing. Reporting to the Director of Events, the Custodian is primarily responsible for maintaining a clean environment for Garden guests and staff. This position is charged with a regular cleaning program of interior and exterior facilities to ensure top quality presentation of public areas for the benefit of the guest experience.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES/TASKS:

  • Adheres to regular daily, weekly and monthly cleaning schedules and performs custodial service to all buildings including, but not limited to: cleaning and sanitizing restrooms; sweeping, mopping, vacuuming and polishing floors; cleaning and dusting furniture; refilling public and staff supplies such as paper towels and soap; washing interior and exterior windows; replacing light bulbs.
  • Maintains all Garden facilities to be free of litter and trash; removes trash as needed from all receptacles; ensures receptacles are available for events and programs; assists in oversight of recycling program.
  • Cleans and maintains building exteriors and other garden structures: cleans door mats, removes cobwebs, sweeps, blows, and power-washes as needed and/or as scheduled.
  • Uses standard supplies and equipment and power tools to complete work, including, but not limited to: cleaning chemicals; high and low speed buffers; vertical one-man lift; hand trucks; pallet jacks; vacuums; pressure washers; ladders; brooms, mops, and squeegees.
  • Maintains the inventory of custodial supplies and equipment and orders supplies in accordance with the seasonal budget and purchasing protocols.
  • Completes appropriate paperwork including daily, weekly and monthly logs.
  • Actively participates in the weekly Operations Meeting as well as additional coordination with members of other departments.
  • Guarantees pre and post-event cleaning; confirm/coordinate contract cleaning, as necessary, and directly manages contract cleaning personnel.
  • Performs comprehensive setup and breakdown before and after private events; Solicits and coordinate help from Facilities Technicians when necessary.
  • Supports the set-up and break down of daily events, classes, activities and public events as scheduled through the institutional process or as requested.
  • Ensures that all buildings and areas are open and managed during posted operating hours including opening and closing of all gates and buildings, arming and disarming alarm systems.
  • Serves as a front-line point of service for basic first aid and contact for emergency services to address issues that arise with guests and staff.
  • Adheres to established safety protocols.
  • Supports all Garden programs and events.
  • Understands the Garden Mission Statement and supports all Garden staff, departments and Garden Leadership in pursuing and achieving institutional goals.
  • Understands the guest perspective and works to support and enhance the guest experience in every way.

  • Ability to be on call for after hour emergencies including nights and/or weekends
  • Willingness to perform other duties, as assigned
  • Computer skills including Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and be able to produce a clean driving record
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to interact with a diverse audience
  • Willingness to wear a uniform and work outside
  • Willingness to promote safety in the workplace
